Silver Spray Boatworks was the brainchild of Alton Best, a successful real estate agent and developer and Will Guthrie, a Harkers Island, NC boat builder with over 50 years experience designing and building sport fishing boats. Will began his boat building career working with his uncle, Julian Guthrie who owned High Tide Boatworks, the predecessor of Jarret Bay Boatworks of Beaufort, NC. Will later operated his own custom boat building business and also worked in hull design and construction for other builders including Lightning Yachts and Jarrett Bay Boatworks. Alton and Will’s objective with Silver Spray Boatworks was to build and sell high-end custom Carolina style sport fishing boats in the 40 – 50 foot hull size. The first hull, a 40 footer, was to be Alton’s personal boat and he still owns it. The second was a 46 footer completed in and sold to this current owner from Ocean City, Maryland.
The hull of the 46 foot boat was built using the cold molded process, with multiple layers of marine grade plywood formed over a hull form designed and built by Will Guthrie. The hull was then covered with biaxial fiberglass, as was much of the interior surface of the hull. The crew that performed the majority of the work on the boat included a commercial fishing boat captain with over 20 years of boat operating, maintenance and construction experience; a former New England lobster fisherman who had also worked for other boat builders; and a semi-retired professional engineer. Emphasis throughout construction of this boat was on quality, safety and maintainability of the finished boat, with the expectation that other customers would want a similar product. Economic conditions in and later had such a negative impact on the real estate market and the demand for custom boats that additional boats were not built.
